Small Town Ball Droppings

January 1st, 2007 · No Comments

Not everyone wants to be in New York City’s Times Square. If you look at who’s there, they are all very young. There is a reason for that – only the young can handle being squished, shoved and cold with no place to go off for a quick bathroom break.

Not so with the small town ball drop. There is one nearby that is so hokey it is wonderful. The town all comes out and visitors join in to welcome the New Year when a local crane company drops this ball (that is decorated but not Waterford glass by any means) about 100 feet while the crowd counts down. There is hot chocolate and a few other goodies. The kids mix with the “older folks” and we even stay awake. This year it wasn’t as cold as other years, but the winter air does help.

Afterwards, there are no shows after with girls who are supposed to be singers wearing barely nothing and shaking more bootie than any babe ought to. Here, when it’s all over, people smile and trot off home to go to bed. No shoving, no squishing, only Happy New Year’s wishing.
