Sometimes nostalgia can catch you off guard. My son, whose strong suit isn’t thinking ahead, taped his fingers to play the conga drums at church this Sunday. Trouble was, he hadn’t put his sneakers on first.
His long untied laces slapping the floor as we hustled to the car, he asked if I would tie his shoes. As I bent over to do this, I traveled back in time to when tying his shoes was an everyday occurrence – also usually done in a hurry on the way out the door. The memory swept over me hard and fast, and as I finished and looked up, he saw the tears in my eyes.
He laughed and said, “I still need you, Mom.â€
Such was my gift – both being needed and him being able to see it.
Then his sisters broke the spell by pointing out that I shouldn’t bend over like that if ever in public, my mascara was now running and looked bad, and groused about me making them late.
One step forward, two steps back.

Oh that was sweet, rude & funny all at once! I know this is a year old but it’s what came up when I clicked on your link. Odd, but I’m glad I found it.
