Cheap Shots – Hockey’s Impact on Teens

Here in Buffalo Sabres country, mothers might be surprised that our young sports fans can memorize facts and stats with speed and accuracy. Surprised because this same child doesn’t score big on his report card and fans on lots of his tests.

The good news is that we can confirm what we thought all along – our kids are capable when there’s a will and motivation. I played Women’s Ice Hockey in college, so I checked this inconsistency carefully.

Now we get to see their degree of loyalty too. (Things aren’t so good as we approach game 4 out of 7 with 3 losses behind us.) Who sees accomplishment, even though we might not be at the pinnacle, just close? Will they join in on the “off with their heads” mentality and act as if this thing is an earth-shattering event? Good things parents don’t act that way. We are our kids real fans, win or lose as long as they do their best.

My son is growing a playoff “beard” – and I use the term loosely – as are many fans around here. (I considered skipping a few electrolysis appointments but decided no goal. ) If the Sabres lose tonight, even if he takes it badly, at least he’ll finally be clean shaved.
