How Heavy is Your Lead Guitar?

May 22nd, 2007 · 3 Comments

My son and his friend are perennial experts – at everything. Sports and music seem to carry the most prowess with them. They are comical when they lecture me about who sang what song in the 70s or 80s. When I was singing some Jefferson Airplane, they stopped and said – “How do you know that song?” Not only did they argue with me about when it was a hit (most definitely in MY day), they started to talk about who played “lead” guitar – pronouncing it as the metal – lead – and not lead as in “leader.”
I thought they were kidding and then I just broke up. They were indignant and they showed me the CD case with someone listed as playing lead guitar. I was going to explain about nouns, adjectives and verbs but thought it too risky with these two stooges.
Try as I might, I couldn’t get them to understand it wasn’t a guitar made of heavy metal. I understand I lost some credibility due to my hysterical fits of laughter imagining some skinny little pop star trying to finger his made of lead guitar or imaging him taking it to the dentist for use during an X-ray. I told them that I thought they were confused with a steel guitar to which my son replied, “Mama, there is no such thing as a steel guitar.” Sounds like a Country Western song to me.

A good country song takes a page out of somebody’s life and puts it to music.” ~ Conway Twitty

[...] Posted by Mary on 01 Jun 2007 at 05:40 am | Tagged as: Family, Kids My sister-in-law is way too organized. The whole family (about 40 of us) invade a camp in Canada on the lake in July annually. One “family” cooks dinner for the whole crew one night and then we rest and enjoy the other nights – we take turns. Sis requires us to plan and submit our menu now. If left up to me, it would be dreamed up on the ride there. My meal team has a theme each year. Two years ago it was “Night at the Prom.” We bought dresses for everyone at the Salvation Army and ate in them. After dinner, we all jumped in the lake with them on. Gram was the Queen of the prom – it was lovely. The other campers thought we were all crazy. Quite right. This year’s theme is the 70s. the whole thing kicks off with a groovy tie-dying event the day before the meal. As our shirts, that we will wear with beads and headbands are drying on the line, we can rap about the menu which is straight from the Moosewood Cookbook, published in good ol’ 1977. It’s from a restaurant in Ithaca, NY that was very hip in the day. We’re doing hippie hummus, peace pita chips, zen zucchini pizza and Mary Jane’s special brownies (legal version). My sister-in-law is excited about being able to wear her earrings the girls thought were maple leafs but were cannabis leaves. My son is doing the mood music as he is an “expert” in music and knows more than the people who actually lived through it. Just to be safe, I gave him the Time Life 70s collection so we really have some authentic background selections. Far out. [...]
