Last year, we didn’t have one single child come to our door for Halloween. We live in the country and our driveway is long and dark.
I know those of you who have hundreds of kids banging on your door for their little piece of candy that you are afraid that you will run out of won’t understand, but I wish we had someone to yell” trick or treat”.
You might think that I really miss seeing those cute little kids all dressed up. You’d be partially right. I would. But more than that, I wouldn’t have to resist the couple of bags of candy that I buy “just in case” someone shows up. That did happen one year. We got a whole bunch of kids and since I had given handfuls of candy to the couple of kids that had come earlier thinking they would be it for the evening, I was getting down there and I had to give out money. Quarters. The trick or treaters liked it but my kids didn’t have lunch money the next day. (No way was I giving them a $20 bill to take to school.) I packed extra chocolate in their lunches to make up for it.
So each year I get a the bags of candy, no one comes, and I end up wearing it the next couple of weeks after Halloween. My saving grace is that I now have to walk this monster of a dog that we got a couple of months ago and it burns off some of the calories. My friend suggested getting a candy that I don’t like. No such thing. I even like Good ‘N Plenty.
Since I have no willpower, I wait to get the probably unneeded candy until the day before Halloween. It is sad that after age 5, each of my kids learned to hide their candy from me, but in my defense, it made them very clever. Someday they’ll thank me.

it’s truly a wonderful feeling to be a mother and seeing the joy blushed on our kids’ faces makes it more meaningful. let’s GO PINK! i just tagged you.

Maybe you could stock up on Peeps after Easter when they’re on sale and give those away for Halloween — inexpensive, unique, and you won’t be tempted at all the eat them afterward (6 month old Peeps…ew).
You’re better than I am — actually KNOW the kids aren’t coming and go out on Halloween night, yet I buy the candy I like three weeks before. And then I buy more when I run out before the holiday.

You could always try my trick. I buy the candy, but I buy a candy I don’t like. Takes courage at the store, but well worth it in the end.

Heather – sad but I love stale peeps. In fact, my daughter and I fight over them.
brokemom – yep. I like ‘em and they make good fake blackened teeth.
susiej – I could try that but that would be some very gross candy (as I like most candy).
marri – I love this kind of meme tag. No real website address so I don’t really have to respond. Yes.

I try to buy candy I don’t like either, but I find my way into liking it at some point.
Sugar really is great stuff.

I wish for trick or treaters too!! In Australia, Halloween is a non-holiday. Rarely celebrated and looked on with disdain. Being Canadian I LOVE it and all the lollies that go with it.
I suppose it IS better for my waistline this way
*sigh*
