Turns out that this Christmas might be the season of drama. In addition to the breakup of one of my kids that has upset her so much that now she is not able to eat more than a mouse (which has NEVER happened to me), someone broke into my mother-in-law’s house and took her pain medication. Not funny.
While most people might not be able to relate to this, she has always left her door open. This suburban-raised Grinch thought she was cured of that last year when someone broke in and stole about a big sum of cash that she should have had in the bank (understood only by those who have lived through the bank crash and the great depression). Apparently not. She still wants to leave her door open in case someone in the family needs something and she’s not home.
She is supposed to have open heart surgery in the next couple of weeks and she didn’t need added stress. My kids are deeply attached to her and are all hopping mad that someone would do that to their sweet Gram who wouldn’t hurt a fly. I have tried to teach her to be a little nastier but it’s no use – she doesn’t have it in her. Oh sure, she might laugh at my tart replys when a clerk is rude to me or twitter at the flip of a finger when we are cut off on the way to the store, but she is a terrible student, never being able to put any of these into practice. After lecture upon lecture detailing what assertive really means, she is a complete and utter failure. Precisely the reason everyone who knows her, loves her.
My guess is that my legacy will be somewhat different than hers. The good news is that I will probably be able to hang onto my cash and pain medication.

Would it be great if our parents listened to us for a change?!? LOL.. So sorry that such a kind lady was victimized, but I know where she is coming from. I grew up in the country and we never locked our doors. When I got married and moved to a bigger area my husband would get so frustrated when I forgot to lock the door.
Old habits die hard..
